Our History
Founded in the mid-1950s, Big McDonald Resort spent decades operating as a traditional, family-run lakeside getaway. It quickly became an annual anchor for families returning year after year to immerse themselves in the timeless joys of fishing, boating, and swimming. Renowned for its abundant walleye and bass, the lake has never stopped producing for anglers, matching the natural beauty above the water with incredible fishing below.
What often began decades ago as a simple weeklong trip between friends has blossomed into an enduring multi-generational tradition. Today, it is common to see grandparents, parents, and grandchildren all gathering to share the laid-back, community-first atmosphere of resort life. In fact, some of our returning families trace their personal history on these shores back over 40 years.
Modern Developments
While the property has evolved and changed hands over the decades, the fall of 2025 marked the beginning of an exciting new chapter: the transition to Big Mac Lake Life.
In this new era, the eight distinct cabins are individually owned and operated by families and individuals who share a deep, personal love for this lake. Many of them grew up experiencing the magic of Northwoods resorts themselves and are dedicated to preserving that nostalgic feel.
To bring the resort into the modern era, some of these cabins have undergone extensive, top-to-bottom renovations. Now many are fully insulated, all-season spaces, they allow guests to experience the quiet beauty of the lake during autumn and winter alongside the classic summer season. The ones with all-season capabilities have “Available Year Around” listed in their description to help assist you when looking for that fall or winter getaway.
Additionally, the resort’s original supply shop and community hub, affectionately known as “The Lodge,” underwent a massive transformation.
It has been beautifully renovated into a unified, luxury all-season rental home designed for large families or groups of friends who want to stay under one roof.
True to its roots, The Lodge remains the beating heart of the resort—especially when groups book multiple cabins alongside the main house for large gatherings.
Upgraded Resort Amenities
We have updated our shared community spaces to offer premium recreation while keeping the vintage charm alive. Guests now have access to a newly re-done amenities area which includes:
- Sport Courts: A brand-new basketball court and modular pickleball space, alongside a complete redone sand volleyball court.
- The Elevated Patio: A perfect new vantage point designed for relaxing, socializing, or catching the action on the volleyball court below.
- The Fish House: A newly constructed, fully air-conditioned fish-cleaning house to keep you cool and comfortable after a successful day on the water.
- Family Space: The traditional play set is still here! But relocated to a shady space, still includes the teeter totter and merry go round which new wood for your children’s delight.
- Biking and Walking Path: The resort has a beautiful walking path that encircles a wetland area, perfect for an evening or afternoon stroll. Then there is also a newly paved, 31-mile multi-city regional bike and walking path that connects to nearby state parks such as the scenic Maplewood park. Perfect for exploring and enjoying the Minnesota wildlife!
